Curious about organic wool ?

What could be more natural than wool ? Many people think that wool is organic since it is a natural fibre, while others use the term in an everyday manner simply to express that the fibre has not been treated with strong chemicals.

There is however a deeper meaning to the word organic, which doesn’t refer to where a product comes from, but instead to how the food and product was grown and processed using nature-friendly methods. Wool’s journey from a grazing sheep to one of Ruskovilla’s wool shirts is a long one. The certification of wool as organic begins with the soil on which the sheep graze, continues on to the well being of the sheep and then moves on to the processing, washing, spinning, dyeing and knitting, etc., of the wool.

Everything comes down to the well being of the pasture and the sheep: attention is paid to the fertility of the soil, crop rotation, the nutrition and health of the sheep, and pest control. Synthetic pesticides, hormones, vaccinations, and genetic modification are prohibited. Good livestock practice and breed specific treatment are a given.

The principle behind organic productions is to produce products whose manufacturing methods are not harmful to the environment or to the health and well being of people, plants, and animals.

Nothing beats wool when it comes to comfort, warmth, elasticity or versatility. And when you source your wool organically from Ruskovilla, you can be sure it’s the best in the world.

Origin

Our wool is ethically produced, certified organic merino wool (mulesing free). The wool is produced in South America: Argentina and Uruguay. The principle behind organic production is to produce products whose manufacturing methods are not harmful to the environment or to the health and wellbeing of people, plants and animals.

Ruskovilla organic merino wool is produced according to the criteria of  IVN / GOTS. The yarn is spun by a german spinnery, and it is certified by IMO. The organic merino wool is knitted in Finland and the wool knits are not finished using any treatments. More about organic wool: www.naturtextil.com and www.imo.ch.

Dyed wool products

The spinnery uses as few synthetic chemicals as possible for dying woollen yarn. The dyeing process takes place in a closed system with the use of reactive dyes causing the fibres to react completely with the  dye and preventing the dyes from running. Therefore, reactive dyes are a safer option for garments that are in direct contact with the skin. No chrom dyes or heavy metal salts are used in the organic production process. Any harmless auxiliary products that are indispensible in the dyeing process are flushed out in the post-dyeing rinsing process.

Merino wool – an inimitable natural product

The explanation for the unique properties of wool is in its structure and its chemical composition. Thanks to its curly nature the wool fiber binds plenty of air. This air layer equalizes the temperature between the skin and the environment. The good feeling is increased by the ability of the wool to absorb moisture, up to 30 % of its weight, as well as the ability to clean itself. Wool absorbs and neutralizes the skin secretions, so these do not form a breeding ground for bacteria. Wool clothes do not need to be washed often, as just airing helps them to freshen up and become clean. Wool is suitable for almost everyone, as the wool itself does not contain ingredients that cause allergies. Only the finest types of wool are suitable for underwear.  Ruskovilla organic wool is very thin, long fibers and soft merino wool, which is seven times thinner than the wool of finnish
